Welcome to my world...

Follow me as I continue to chase ‘Technology’… in this field you can quickly slip into irrelevance if you don’t keep up with all of the changes in technology.

Hi, I’m Oliver. I am a Cyber Security Pro with a heavy Linux background and I’ve been chasing ‘Technology’ for several decades.

Legacy Computing

I started out in IBM Mainframe computer operations working my way up from the tape pool to to the print pool to console operator, tech support and then into systems programming.

Distributed Computing

I witnessed the proliferation of smaller, more powerful computers and I built networks to enable them to talk with one another.

We take a lot for granted now, but there was a time when you had to buy a separate TCP/IP stack for your Windows PC.

Bit By The Linux/Unix Bug

Back in the late ’90s I got bit by the Unix bug.

There was no such thing as ecommerce back then, I ordered my Slackware Linux distro via the USPS and received a box set of dozens of 2.5″ floppies several weeks later.

Cyber Security

It wasn’t called ‘Cyber Security’ back then, it was just security.

Connecting my Linux box to the Internet and sharing my Internet connection with my home lab network forced me to learn about firewalls, NAT, proxy servers, SOCKS and properly hardening a server.

I got really good at this stuff and have been making a living as a Cyber Security Pro ever since.

Head In The Clouds

The latest advances in technology has me chasing Clouds.

AWS dominates the Cloud market and it kinda reminds me of the IBM Mainframe days.

We were deep into automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) back in the Mainframe days.

The Mainframe IaC stuff happened with NetView and Rexx because we had to reduce the time it took to spin up our Mainframe environment at a ‘cold’ BCP/DR site.

I Love This Stuff

I love the technology and being able to use it to help solve problems. It provides an opportunity be creative and innovative.

I’ve got a lot of stuff to share with you and hope you find something useful here…
